The first document believed to be written in French was the Strasbourg Oaths, dated in 842-a version of an oath sworn by two of Charlemagne’s grandsons. Standard French is based on the dialect of Paris, called Francien, though numerous other regional dialects persist throughout France. French has for centuries been one of the most commonly used languages in international diplomacy. It is the first language for thousands of citizens of the United States, primarily in Maine and Louisiana. It is the official language of more than 20 other countries and one of the official languages in several more countries, including Canada, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, and Cameroon. Frenchįrench has been the official language of France since 1459. Word pronunciations were altered, and changes in grammar occurred. As spoken Latin spread over former non-Latin-speaking areas, each tribe of people transferred some of its own linguistic habits to it. The clear differences between the Romance languages can be accounted for by geography. The complicated grammatical structure of Latin gave way to greater simplicity in the Romance languages, however. The languages are classified as Romance because of similarities in structure and vocabulary. They-and a number of lesser-known languages and dialects-are all derived from medieval Latin dialects spoken in areas of Europe governed by the Roman Empire. French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, and Spanish are called Romance languages.
